Weighing In Motion
The Weighing in Motion (WIM) module determines the (quasi-stationary) wheel load for every wheel. The optical sensors measure the bending of the rail during a wheel passage and Gotcha's advanced WIM algorithm uses the information recorded by all sensor to determine the wheel load, axle load, vehicle weight and the total train weight.
Because Gotcha determines the loads on wheel level, it is possible to determine several other quantities such as the diagonal imbalances, an important parameter for derailment safety.
The Gotcha WIM module automatically calibrates in normal service using vehicles with known weights, such as locomotives. This eliminates the need of expensive and time consuming calibration methods and allows for a continuous calibration that automatically compensates for changes in weather conditions and track parameters such as ballast bed stiffness.
